Template Assisted Crystallization — scale prevention without salt, electricity, or wastewater. Beneficial minerals stay in your water. Zero maintenance. Environmentally responsible.
Template Assisted Crystallization
TAC technology is a fundamentally different approach to hard water treatment. Ion exchange softeners remove calcium and magnesium from the water and replace them with sodium. TAC technology leaves the minerals in the water but transforms them from their scale-forming dissolved ionic state into non-scaling microscopic calcite crystals.
The result: water that tests positive for calcium and magnesium on a hardness test (because the minerals are still present), but behaves like softened water because those minerals can no longer adhere to surfaces. No new scale forms on fixtures, water heaters, pipes, or appliances. Existing scale gradually dissolves over weeks as water chemistry equilibrium shifts.
The benefits are significant: no salt to buy or carry, no electricity, no wastewater discharge, no HOA complications, and you retain the beneficial dietary minerals in your drinking and cooking water. The Naturwise system is the right choice for many Sarasota County homes — we'll tell you honestly during your free water test whether it fits your water chemistry.

The Science
Incoming water with dissolved calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) — the minerals that cause hard water scale — flows into the Naturwise media tank. The minerals are still fully dissolved in ionic form at this stage.
Water flows through the bed of TAC polymer beads. Each bead is covered with thousands of microscopic nucleation sites — tiny surface features that act as catalysts for calcium carbonate crystal formation. This is the key process: controlled nucleation.
At each nucleation site, dissolved calcium ions combine with carbonate ions to form microscopic calcite crystals. These crystals are electrically neutral — unlike the dissolved ionic calcium, they carry no charge and have no tendency to adhere to pipe walls or fixture surfaces. The TAC beads themselves are not consumed in this process — they act as catalysts and are not used up.
The now-crystalline calcium flows through your pipes, fixtures, water heater, and appliances without adhering to any surface. The scale-forming mechanism is eliminated. Existing scale deposits gradually dissolve over weeks as the equilibrium of your water chemistry shifts toward the crystalline form.
Unlike ion exchange softeners, the Naturwise system has no regeneration cycle, no salt tank, no drain connection, and no control valve to program. The TAC media is passive — it simply sits in the tank. The only maintenance required is media replacement every 3–5 years, which takes about 30 minutes of technician time.

Customer Feedback
“We live in a condo with HOA restrictions on water softener brine discharge. The Naturwise system was the perfect solution — no salt, no wastewater, no drama with the HOA. And it absolutely works. Our shower glass stays clean, no scale on the faucets, and our skin feels noticeably better. Recommend without hesitation.”

“As someone who cooks with water seriously, I wanted the minerals preserved — I just didn't want the scale. The Naturwise system delivered exactly that. Our cookware is clean, the coffee tastes better, and we have zero scale on any fixtures. The tech explained the science clearly and the installation took under 2 hours.”

“I had a salt-based softener at my previous home and always worried about the environmental impact. The Naturwise system was the right choice for my values. It has been running for 8 months with zero maintenance — just as promised. I forget it is there, which is exactly what I wanted.”

“The honest recommendation from Convenient Water sold us. They could have pushed the more expensive salt system, but they assessed our hardness level (about 160 mg/L) and said the Naturwise was the better fit. That kind of honesty earns long-term customer loyalty.”

Common Questions
This is the most common question about TAC technology. The water hardness "reading" you get from a test strip or meter measures total dissolved calcium and magnesium — regardless of their molecular form. TAC transforms calcium from dissolved ionic form (Ca²⁺) to solid crystalline form (CaCO₃ micro-crystals). The total calcium content stays the same, but its behavior changes completely. Ionic calcium is electrically charged and sticks to surfaces. Crystalline calcium is electrically neutral and does not stick. The hardness reading stays the same; the scale-forming behavior is eliminated.
Yes — gradually. When the equilibrium of water chemistry in your plumbing shifts due to the TAC process, existing scale deposits become undersaturated relative to the new water conditions and slowly dissolve over weeks. Most customers notice their existing scale deposits reducing within 4–8 weeks of installation. This is actually a benefit over salt softeners, which also dissolve scale gradually after installation. Very thick deposits (e.g., in a water heater that has never been treated) may take longer.
Naturwise is ideal if: (1) you prefer zero salt and zero maintenance; (2) your water hardness is below 200 mg/L (most of Sarasota County qualifies); (3) you have HOA restrictions on brine discharge; (4) you want to retain beneficial minerals in your drinking water; (5) environmental impact is a concern. The WS1 ion exchange softener is better if: (1) you want 0 gpg hardness (measurable zero); (2) your hardness is above 250 mg/L; (3) you have significant dissolved iron that must be removed; (4) you prefer the tactile feeling of fully softened water. We test your water and give you an honest comparison — not a sales pitch.
No to both. The Naturwise system is 100% passive — no electricity, no drain, no backwash cycle, no regeneration, no bypass valves (though we install them as standard practice for any service need). The only connection required is the inlet and outlet pipe connections. This makes it ideal for installations where drain access is limited, power is inconvenient, or HOA restrictions prohibit discharge.
TAC polymer media typically lasts 3–5 years under normal residential conditions. Media degradation is gradual — scale prevention effectiveness slowly decreases rather than stopping abruptly. We offer media testing during service visits to confirm performance. Media replacement is a straightforward service call: we drain the tank, replace the media bed, and refill — typically 45–60 minutes. As with all service, we never charge a service call fee; you only pay for the media itself.
We measure your hardness, pH, and iron on-site and give you an honest comparison of TAC vs. ion exchange for your specific water chemistry. No pressure — just facts.
